Success in BJJ, According to Professor Lucio “Lagarto”: Skills, Mindset, and Consistency
When people ask me, “Professor Lucio, what’s the secret to success in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?” I smile… because there isn’t one.
When I first stepped onto the mats decades ago, I didn’t know what “success” in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu really meant.
Back then, I thought it was about medals, belts, and recognition.
But the more I trained … the more I fell, failed, and stood up again… the more I realised that true success in BJJ has very little to do with what’s around your waist, and everything to do with what’s inside your mind.
Over the years, I’ve seen thousands of students walk through our doors at Valour Jiu-Jitsu HQ in Fulham.
Each with a different goal… fitness, self-defense, discipline, confidence, healing.
And yet, the ones who grow the most, on and off the mats, always share three simple things:
Skills, Mindset, and Consistency.
🥋 1. Skills: Learn Slowly, But Learn Well
In Jiu-Jitsu, the temptation to rush is strong.
You see the black belts move like water, you want to get there tomorrow.
But skill in BJJ is not about collecting techniques, it’s about understanding movement.
It’s about timing, leverage, pressure, and calmness under resistance.
The moment you stop focusing on winning, and start focusing on learning, everything changes.
At Valour HQ, we remind our students that progress happens quietly.
It’s in that moment when you finally escape a position that used to trap you…
or when you help a new student understand a basic guard.
That’s skill. That’s growth.
“The body learns what the mind believes is possible.”
If you’re new, start with a Free Intro Class >>> learn how to move, breathe, and stay calm on the mats. That’s where real skill begins.
🧠 2. Mindset: How You Think Determines How You Train
Your mindset in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is your foundation…
I’ve met athletes who were physically strong but mentally fragile…
and beginners who were unsure, yet resilient like steel.
BJJ teaches you that your biggest opponent isn’t the person in front of you…
it’s the voice in your head that says, “You can’t.”
When you lose, it’s not failure.
It’s data…
When you struggle, it’s not weakness.
It’s feedback…
That mindset, once built on the mats, starts to appear everywhere
in your work, your relationships, your daily life.
You learn patience, discipline, and the quiet strength to stay calm under pressure.
If you want to know what that feels like, visit our Our Programme page, each class is built to develop both your body and your mindset.
⏳ 3. Consistency: The True Secret of BJJ Success
There’s a saying “Black belts are white belts who never quit.”
And it’s true.
Consistency is what separates those who admire Jiu-Jitsu from those who live it.
It’s showing up when you’re tired.
It’s training when life feels heavy.
It’s learning to enjoy the process, not just the result.
Even one or two classes a week can completely change your rhythm…
Because every time you step on the mat, you’re not just improving your technique
you’re shaping your habits, your resilience, and your character.
If you’re serious about improving, our Class Schedule helps you find the consistency that works for your lifestyle.
🌱 What BJJ Taught Me About Life
Jiu-Jitsu, at its heart, is a reflection of life itself.
You learn that control doesn’t mean force.
That strength comes from calmness.
That progress isn’t always visible but it’s always happening.
Whether you’re a beginner or a black belt, these three pillars “skills, mindset, and consistency” will always guide you.
And when you truly understand them, you realise success in BJJ isn’t about beating others
It’s about becoming better than you were yesterday.
So, take that first step.
…Put on the gi.
…Bow in.
And start discovering what success means to you.
Because,
“ It’s all about you “
